Avebury Stone Circle

Yesterday we had a guided walk around Bath in the morning, after looking through the Abbey. It was in the low 50's so Rhonda had to bundle up. We don't usually do tours, but this one was very good and free. We learned about how Bath became the IN place during the 1700's. The blocks Georgian buildings were designed by John Woods and they are still models for urban design. Woods designed both the Circus and the Crescent. The Belmont, where we are staying is a similar design, with 60 Steps up to our room!

After touring the city Rhonda was very chilled so we had chocolate and tea before hiking along the Avon Kennand Canal to Bathampton, where we had lunch in the George Pub. Some of the boats along the canal are for hire and it would be possible to go all the way to London on one. Sound interesting?

On the way to the canal we saw two sights that made us think of the optomism of the Peruvians,
who had rebar sticking out of the tops of their houses in hopes of some day putting on a second floor.

When we got back to town we pub hopped and had a great time watching people.

Today we took train and bus to the Avebury stone circles. These stones were placed 5000 years ago and are thought to be an astronomical observitory.

The bonus at the Avebury site is the recently refurbished manor house and gardens. Sculptures were placed throughout the gardens, which are beautiful.

When we got back to town we had a pint at the Star Inn, which was highly recommended by our host Archie as, " No food, just good beer." For dinner we had a place picked out in the neighborhood, but there was a black tie dinner being held there and even if invited our hiking clothes would not have done. So we had dinner at a Sardinian restaurant, Aio, we had seen on a walk around town and it was terrific -- octopus and potatoe salad, YUM.
