Shopping Day

Yesterday was shopping day. We dawdled around the house, taking our time, slowing the pace and then headed out to the Camden Locks Market, one tube stop away. We walked the blocks of stalls of mostly kitschy stuff with crowds of Londoners playing hookey to take advantage of the weather. Stalls offered a huge selection of ethnic foods and we all lunched on Morracan, Indian, Persian, Chinese and Thai choices. Besides the market the Reagents Canal locks themselves were interesting to explore.

After the market we took the tube to town and walked across the river to the Tate Modern. The Tate has some very provocative works including a room devoted to cubism and another to surrealism. For me the the big question of modern art is how choices are made for what gets hung? Why is one completely black canvas or torn canvas more deserving than another?

Every bit of grass in the city is strewn with people enjoying the sun.

After the Tate we split up into two groups, the real shoppers, who went on to Harrods and the viewers, who went to Somerset House and the pubs near the courts. Apparently Harrods was way expensive, although interesting for the insights it gives on the lives of the 1%ers. Ben's pub guide warned us that at 5 the pubs in the area would be jammed, but luckily, the weather being good, most people were having their pints in the street so there was room for us.

I saw an interesting hand made sign taped to the rear window of a car today, "Stop the looting of Greece."
