Kew Gardens

We all got up today and rode the tube to Westminster Pier and then a boat to Kew Gardens. The boat ride was leisurely and fun. We wanted to do this because we remember how fun our trip on the Potomic to Mt. Vernon was. And we really like arboretums and gardens.

The architecture along the river was very interesting:

And the river itself, even at low tide was beautiful. Going upstream and against the tide it took us 44 minutes to traverse the course of the annual Cambridge-Oxford crew race. The course record is about 16 minutes.

It was 80 today, perfect weather for the gardens. They say there are 33 K species in the garden. They range from massive beech trees, to tiny flowers. There are wonderful exhibits of plants in the ground and then there are huge green houses with both tropical desert and rain forest plantings. Arranged amidst the plantings were wood sculptures by David Nash. It is England so the best colour this time of year is in the azalea and rhoderdendron garden, except for a dazzling dispay of California poppies in front of the very modern Princess of Whales Conservatory greenhouse.
