London Orientation

I was up early, so went out for a walk in our neighborhood and found a nice ethnic grocery a five minute walk away where we can get everything we need for our celebration dinner when Ben and Melanie arrive and we are all together again. Lots of walkers out early, off to school or work or just walking the dog. I just touched the edge of Parliment Hill Park this morning, but will go back tomorrow morning and explore further. Here's why:

We all got out for a long walk after first taking the tube to Trafalger Square dominated by Lord Nelson's Column. From there we strolled along White Hall Street, past Downing Street, Big Ben, Westminster Abby and Parliment. We then crossed the Thames on the Westminster Bridge.

We walked the South Bank trail past the National Theatre, and the Tate Modern and recrossed the river over the Millenium Pedestrian Bridge, at the Globe Theatre. We stopped for lunch in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, which is immense. Then we walked along the Thames to the Tower of London. The mix of archetectural styles between St. Paul's and the Tower is spectacular.

We stopped in Leadenhall Market walking back toward St. Paul's and noticed that we were not wearing the correct uniform. When we inquired about the attire worn in the area, which runs to pin striped double breasted suits, with bright shirts, red ties and paisley pocket handkerchiefs, we were told that Lloyds of London is next door.

We walked down the Strand to Covent Garden almost overwhelmed by buildings, people, and buses. The city is immense and busy and awe inspiring. After wandering the narrow streets of Covent Garden we took the tube crowded with commuters back home.

After an all day walk in the heart of the city, we love the peace and quiet of our neighborhood.
